Studio + Neighborhood Tour

I didn’t always love San Francisco. The move here was mostly prompted by my husband getting a new job in the city. Although I grew up in Portland, my college years on the east coast felt like a homecoming. The east coast just seemed to fit me in a way I couldn’t describe. I loved the bundled up cold winters and the bustling nature of the people and cities. Leaving that behind was an extremely difficult decision.

I had never visited San Francisco before we decided to move over. Although I had been close in proximity to California growing up, it seemed like a totally different world from my east coast college years, or my Portland upbringing.

However, as Aurorei has grown and I have come to see more of the city, I have realized how San Francisco and I are not so different from one another. As many of you know, the core of Aurorei is its dedication to local manufacturing and ethically sourced fabrics. For those two things San Francisco is really the ideal location.

Whenever I talk to new people in the Bay about Aurorei they understand instantly what the brand is doing. There seems to be a deep kinship within the community that ethically living isn't a burden, but a normal part of everyday life. This is no where more apparently shown than the inner mission district where our studio is situated.

The neighborhood has a warehouse feeling, scattered with hidden coffee shops and boutique stores that you could easily mistake for paper factories. I currently live a 10 minute walk from the Aurorei studio. My morning commute is filled with the scent of pastry from the bread factory, and the barking of happy dogs in the nearby no-cage doggy day care. I walk by boutiques that only showcase locally handmade brands, and the Tartine Manufactory where they make food in house with ingredients sourced from the Bay. It is truly an inspiring experience that always gives me a little extra energy every morning.

Our studio is located on the 2nd floor of a large warehouse building that holds an amazing community of artists and fashion brands. Our small corner of the warehouse is lined with shelves of leather and linen cloth, along with samples of our ever expanding collection. All of the products are made by hand in our studio space, allowing us to have full control of the production process, and to guarantee that our goods are being made in an ethical fashion.

Now-a-days I feel lucky to be living and working in such an amazing neighborhood and warehouse building. San Francisco’s community really understands what Aurorei is doing, and has allowed us to grow with a group of like minded brands and individuals at our side. Although the East Coast is definitely in Aurorei’s future, I have really enjoyed the time spent working and living in such an amazing city as San Francisco.
